Three young men – including one who perceives of himself as a woman – were arrested and charged for holding a 14-year-old child in sexual captivity.
While living in Kansas in 2016, 21-year-old Ian Nathaniel Smith met the adolescent girl on Kik, and began grooming the child via the Skype, KiK and Chat-Tango apps, eventually managing to coerce her to perform sexual acts on live-streaming video. In 2017, he lured the troubled adolescent from her home in Indiana, driving her across state lines and “delivering her to” Bryan Matthew Otero and Eric Zyn Ho in Cincinnati, Ohio, according to court documents. Mr. Ian intended to return for the child once he could afford his own residence.
Bryan – who was born male but identifies as a woman named “Lacey” – and his boyfriend Eric Ho were involved in a “BDSM (bondage, domination, submission, and sadomasochism) lifestyle,” records show. At their Clermont County apartment, the girl was subjected to “sadomasochistic conduct,” the judge found, and Bryan’s emails indicated that the child was not free to leave. “Degrading and humiliating don’t even begin to describe” what the girl endured, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle Healey. U.S. Attorney Ben Glassman alleged that Eric and Brian had conspired to have the girl engage in a commercial sex act, and conspired to coerce her to engage in sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of creating child pornography.
Ian was indicted on charges of sexual exploitation-production of child pornography, traveling with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct and possession of child pornography. He pleaded down to child pornography, and was sentenced in March to 30 years in prison, to be followed by 25 years of supervised release and registration as a sex offender.
Bryan, then 27, and Eric, then 25, were charged with federal conspiracy to sex traffic children and to produce child pornography. The two men pleaded guilty to one count of federal conspiracy to sex traffic a child. Eric also pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to produce child pornography. Eric was sentenced to 30 years in prison, while Bryan received a 10-year-sentence, to be followed with registration as a sex offender for both men upon release. The child was reunited with her family.
