Gaffney, South Carolina – Three men, two of whom identify as transgender women, are accused of robbing a store, and beating up a male employee who tried to stop them before deliberately striking him with their getaway car.
Walter Beaty, aged 25, and Darin Dawkins and Edmond Lacy, both aged 26, entered the Cricket Wireless store on West Floyd Baker Boulevard in Gaffney, S.C. at 11:34 AM on Wednesday, March 6.
The men posed as ordinary customers, pretending to look at cell phones.
After a few minutes, the three men ran out of the store with cell phones in their hands.
Employee Wael Waked, who was on the job for the first time, chased the men outside as one of the three pulled the getaway car around.
The men began beating the employee about the head and body with a gun until their victim collapsed.
The men entered the getaway car, and the driver struck the employee with the vehicle before driving out of the parking lot.
Captain Ron Ramsey stopped the car less than a block away from the store. He says he found the stolen cell phones in the vehicle, one of which still had the Cricket Wireless SIM card inserted.
The three men were arrested and charged with armed robbery.
Law enforcement is reviewing surveillance video of the incident.
Mr. Dawkins has an extensive history of convictions, including drug possession, larceny and a protection order violation.
The employee was treated for his injuries at Cherokee Medical Center, and released.
