Omaha, Nebraska, US – On April 11, 2019 a group of high school girls walked out to protest a policy that allows a male who now identifies as a girl to access the girls’ bathrooms and locker rooms. During the walkout, they chanted “We want our privacy! He is a male!”

The school district has based its transgender policy on the U.S. Department of Education’s 2016 guidelines outlined in “Examples of Policies and Emerging Practices for Supporting Transgender Students”. The Department of Justice and the Department of Education subsequently withdrew this guidance in February 2017, because the guidance does not “contain extensive legal analysis or explain how the position is consistent with the express language of Title IX, nor did they undergo any formal public process.”

Council Bluffs Community School District Superintendent Vicki Murillo said there is a process in place to grant transgender or transitioning students permission to use the restroom that corresponds to their gender identity. Diane Ostrowski, spokesperson for Council Bluffs Community Schools, said that the school is working with the male student to “complete the vetting process”.

The withdrawn guidelines specified that “schools generally rely on students’ (or in the case of younger students, their parents’ or guardians’) expression of their gender identity. Although schools sometimes request some form of confirmation, they generally accept the student’s asserted gender identity”.

According to a student participating in the walkout, the male student “is not doing anything to be transgender.”

  1. It was a clumsy impromptu protest against an transgender girl posting a selfie taken in the boy’s toilet. Men never take selfies in toilets. Big breach of protocols that combine to make unisex toilets are nightmare for males.

  2. Good for them! Time for women to stand up and fight against the man’s rights movement. Let men fix the violence problems they have–why does no one ever comment about how men’s rooms are portrayed? As violent hell-holes and rape joints? Women can’t solve this –men must. And males and their delusions and violence do not belong in sex-segregated spaces.
